Something only a North Indian will do ...make a tadka for idli....
Sacrilege..
But the easiest thing to do -to make bland stuff interesting...I'm not saying that idli's are bland...No they are wholesome ,nutritious...etc etc etc...
but they need the wow factor...
We even do tadka on a glass of juice..so why should the humble idli be left behind???
Actually the tadka on the juice is totally FAT FREE...Totally alcoholic! So totally worth a try...
This tadka...spiced up our morning ...breakfast is fun!Sometimes!
Getting ready to go and take the end of term history, civics and geography exam....all rolled into one.
This made for a good mood for sure!
and they looked like this...
So try this for your little one...and see these expressions...
For the
Tadka Idli.....
you need
8 Idlis...made out of the regular Dal rice batter or out of semolina rawa
8-10 curry leaves
1/2 onion finely sliced(optional...any other finely shredded vegetable like capsicum,carrot...etc will also do)
1 tsp rye...or mustard seeds
1 tsp sambhar masala
Salt and Red Chili flakes according to taste.
1 tbsp ghee or butter
I had the regular batter....thick and fermented rich in Vitamin B6....
and the idli maker,If you don't have one.......you can use glass bowls too..
just grease lightly with ghee or butter....oil is just not right here...
Now for the batter....make sure you have a cup of water at the base of your idli steamer.
Thank you Tupperware for beautifying our kitchen counters.....
now microwave on high 5-6 minutes.And De-mould
Effortless!
Now cut into quarters...
and get the condiments.Thats all thats needed.
and put the pan to heat.Put the remaining ghee in the pan...heat and add the mustard seeds and let them pop and crackle...
Get the onions in,with the curry leaves.
Now season with the salt ,red chilli flakes and sambhar masala(I use Everest Brand....)And sprinkle a wee bit of water....stops the spices from burning.
Dump the quartered idlis and TOSS.Hone your skills ,even if a few fall on the ground...get your dog to lick it off the floor.Me?I have a Lhasa Apso...who adores all things with ghee or butter...the smell of tadka generally wakes him from his slumber and he graciously obliges.Only now, there is less stuff falling....sad for him!
Just a couple of seconds more.....
and plate...or tiffin...
Only I forgot ,exams mean no Tiffin! So a nice plate and some Ketchup...
And some fun before the bus comes honking at our door.
He finished the breakfast by the way, otherwise I usually have to excavate fungus wrapped AL foil from his school bag every few days.
Ah! Satisfaction!
So what are you baking today????
