My Delhi Manifesto-My city ,My love and My life

Posted on 08:53 by Unknown

Mera dil, Meri Dilli.
My city...and I ♥ Delhi.
I may not have been born in Delhi, but in all senses, I was born here. finished school, college, got an education, found my calling and my job and fell in love in this city.
I have awesome memories here.
This is the city I call home.
The parents live here .I learnt to drive here and know the roads of Delhi better than I know any other place. Love the markets and the food here.
Every time I come to Delhi, the happiness quotient rises.
Delhi has changed.
The number of people that now inhabit Delhi, could be the same as that in a small country. And we do have a government...
Maybe parallel governments...
About 15 years ago,Delhi was madness. Traffic snarls and two hour long jams. Bad public transport and bad power cuts. Pollution and smog to kill a lot of people...
Crime and an ugly skyline..
We have a lot to thank Shiela Dixit for. Because she was at the helm(maybe) today Delhi is City Beautiful.
The CNG brought down the air pollution, metro changed the public transport ,no more blue and red line buses and then the changes because of the commonwealth games have made Delhi an international city...
But does it???
The skyline may have changed , but the city essentially has not.
The mindset of the people has not.
They still view women as an object,to be desired,to be ridiculed and to be possessed.
The Delhi that I want to live in,My Dilli must make a change.
The initiative must come from the government and the government must be strong enough to make sure its done.
My Delhi Manifesto will be something like this.

  1. More police men-Hire more police men and remove police men from useless duties of politicians and senior officials and let them do some policing for a change. Lighten their work load so that they are less stressed and more amicable and cooperative.
  2. Arm the men who ensure law enforcement-not just with weapons but also with strong enough laws that some ones uncle or son or relative does not get away scot free.
  3. Fine the public-ensure that the public follows traffic rules and keeps the city accident free by driving without speaking on the cell phones and that people don't litter .
  4. Sanitise known crime prone areas -Regular checks and raids by the police are mandatory to ensure the fear of Delhi police in the mind of the criminals.
  5. Make resident welfare societies responsible-encourage the RWAs and the citizens to volunteer to help make Delhi a secure city.
  6. Reduce traffic on the roads-Try implementing what the Greeks did...odd dates and odd number registration plates on the roads. We can maybe skip Sundays and public holidays ,but at least a few days of the week can be strict no car days on the roads.
  7. Hike up the tax on the number of cars per household- If a family has more than two cars per house hold, let them pay more an d more...after all family values get stronger when we travel together.
  8. Increase enrollment in night schools-try to educate the school dropouts and those who are uneducated ...education is empowerment after all.
  9. Street lights -More street lights so that no roads are unsafe.
  10. Trucks and heavy vehicles-must be routed out of Delhi...the immense traffic snarls that trucks and trailers just passing through Delhi cause can be avoided if they use a bypass.
  11. Public phone booths and chargers to help those who are stranded...
  12. Patrolling-More vigilant patrolling and CC TVs to ensure that an incident like Damini's Rape doesn't recur.
  13. Better Roads-the connecting roads should be free of pot holes and well lit.
  14. Mafia-punish and get rid of the land mafia, the parking mafia, the begging mafia, the drug mafia, the cartel of the politicians ...all those who make the city unsafe.
  15. Bribe-punish all those who take and offer bribes as well. The pay will never be enough but bribes are not an answer.

A free wifi or more malls and a  better looking skyline are not meaningful if the women and the senior citizens are not safe. A pollution free city will make a lot more children free from respiratory ailments.
Let Dilli be safe again.
Let Dilli be clean again.
I want to be safe in my city.
